VANCOUVER – The No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep over the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack with a second consecutive three-set win (25-14, 25-18, 25-11).
BOX SCORE
Â
The Wolfpack played valiantly and provided a much closer contest than yesterday, pushing the Thunderbirds close in the second set.
Â
Lisa Barclay led UBC with 12 kills while
Rosie Schlagintweit and
Alissa Coulter had 10 each as well. For TRU, Morgan Kolasa recorded eight kills.
Â
The first set was quickly under UBC's control. The 'Birds got off to a quick start and Barclay, Schlagintweit and
Mariah Bruinsma got the teams formidable offense going and it was easy going from thereon in to close the set out. Bruinsma and Schlagintweit had a 100 percent success rate on attack with four and five kills respectively.Â
Kirsty Setterlund kept up her incredible assist rate with 14 in the opening set.
Â
The Wolfpack rallied for the second set and held the lead going into the first time-out. Thompson Rivers' biggest offensive weapon Kolasa got her game going and registered four kills. The Wolfpack had plenty to do on defence as well and recorded four blocks in a single rally, with Kaitlin Lomas credited for two of those. The score was tied at 16-16 but the Thunderbirds surged into a 9-2 run that closed out the set.
Â
Despite two strong opening sets, TRU fell away in the third. UBC opened up a rapid 7-0 led which allowed head coach
Doug Reimer to rest his frontline players and the women professionally closed out the game 25-11. The match ended disappointingly for Thompson Rivers, much like how most of their weekend went; Kaitlin Lomas' service died into the net to end proceedings and leave them winless through their first six matches. UBC advances to a 6-0 record and take sole control over top spot in the conference.
Â
Reimer was once again impressed by his group of young players, and their implementation of his game plans.
Â
"We made many a few too many unforced errors in the second set, and credit to Thompson Rivers they pushed us" said Reimer. "For a team that hasn't won a lot of sets they played very well and were competitive, especially through those first two. Defensively perhaps we need to be a little bit tighter at times, but overall it was a very good weekend for us."
Â
The Thunderbirds are away next weekend in Manitoba when they take on the University of Winnipeg on both Friday and Saturday night.
Â
The WolfPack will travel to Edmonton next weekend for a two-game set against the Alberta Pandas.
