VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team split its final two games at the University of Alberta Pandas HoopFest tournament in Edmonton this weekend.
The T-Birds trailed 36-35 at the half on Saturday against the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, but a strong second 20 minutes of play allowed the team to win 71-61.
New Brunswick led 59-58 with 4:32 left in the fourth quarter but UBC ended the game on a 13-2 run. Six of those final 13 points came from
Kris Young, who finished with a team-high 16 points.
Harleen Sidhu added 14 points while
Maggie Sundberg and
Cassandra Knievel had 13 and 10, respectively.
UBC hit 10 three-point shots compared to UNB's two.
On Sunday morning, UBC fell 80-43 to the three-time defending CIS champions, the University of Windsor Lancers.
Harleen Sidhu was the only T-Bird in double digits, scoring 18 points. She was also named a tournament all-star.
UBC will return home for two non-conference games this week at War Memorial Gym. On Thursday, Oct. 24, the team will host Warner Pacific College of Oregon at 5 p.m. The next night, UBC will face Brock University of St. Catharines, Ont. at 6 p.m.
