VANCOUVER - The No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team pushed its winning streak to 14 straight Canada West matches after a 3-0 (25-4, 25-17 and 25-16) victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in Kamloops on Saturday night.
BOX SCORE
“We played very well in the first set with no hitting errors," said UBC head coach
Doug Reimer. "That is pretty difficult to respond to but they (TRU) did a good job.”
With setter
Kirsty Setterlund (White Rock, BC) opening the match on serve, UBC rolled off seven straight points to set the tone for the rest of the match. Of the four points given up by the T-Birds in the first set, two came on service errors.
The second set was much closer and the two teams split the first 24 points evenly. Then
Lisa Barclay (Brandon, MB) sparked an 8-1 run that allowed UBC to take control. She knocked down a kill to give her team a 13-12 lead and then served up an ace on the next point. She added another ace and by the end of the T-Birds' run, they were up 20-13, a lead they maintained to the conclusion of the set.
The visitors wasted no time clinching the match in the third set, quickly opening with a 7-2 lead. UBC finished the game by taking five of the final six points, with
Kristine Johnson (Winnipeg, MB) providing a couple of kills.
UBC had 12 kills from
Rosie Schlagintweit (Abbotsford, BC). Barclay had eight kills with Abigail Keeping (Surrey, BC) contributing five.
Danielle Richards (Shawnigan Lake, BC) had 28 assists
while
Juliana Kaufmanis (Richmond, BC) had a team-high eight digs.
Reimer got to use a lot of his bench in this match with 12 players seeing the floor. He says it will be beneficial as the T-Birds gear up for the playoffs.
“Absolutely we will need those players to be used to situations where they will have to step in and serve coming off the bench. That was one of the goals for us this weekend,” he said.
UBC improves to 15-1 and will return home to host UBC Okanagan at home next weekend.
