VANCOUVER –
Brylle Kamen (Paris, France) scored 12 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds in an 87-61 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg on Friday night.
Incredibly, this is the second straight game in which Kamen has recorded 21 rebounds, tied for second most in UBC basketball history behind Aaron Point's 23 in a 1987 game. Kamen also had 21 boards in a Dec. 1, 2012 game versus Lethbridge.
BOX SCORE
“There was very little flow to the game and we didn't play very good basketball. With injuries to
Jordan Jensen-Whyte and
Jared Casey we tried to sub regularly and this may have led to us playing a little bit sloppy,” said UBC head coach
Kevin Hanson.
“It was a good physical game for us to play and the style was a little different than what we are used to. Manitoba did a good job of slowing us down in the second but we had good first and third quarters. Overall, it's a good win on the road after the five-week layoff from conference play.”
UBC (9-2), which trailed just once in the game, used a 10-0 that bridged the first and second quarters to pull away from the hosts.
With his team up 18-14 with 3:02 left in the opening period of play, Kamen converted on a jump shot after grabbing his second offensive rebound of the possession.
Tommy Nixon (Vancouver, BC) capped off the run a half minute in the second quarter by knocking down a jump shot and the ensuing free throw after he was fouled on the play. That sequence put UBC up 28-14. The 'Birds entered halftime with a 37-29 advantage.
Manitoba closed to within seven points on three different occasions but each time, UBC had a response and it was from either Kamen or Nixon, who ended the night with 13 points.
The 'Birds increased their lead in the fourth closing the game on a 17-2 run.
Doug Plumb (Pitt Meadows, BC) led all UBC players with 16 points, while adding nine rebounds.
Geoff Pippus (Colorado Springs, CO) chipped in with 15 points off the bench.
Isaiah Solomon (Richmond, BC) was the fifth T-Bird in double digits. He had a dozen points as well.
UBC will travel across town to face the Winnipeg Wesmen, who are undefeated at home, on Saturday night at 5 p.m. Pacific.
