VANCOUVER – The No. 9 Alberta Pandas scored 53 consecutive points to beat the host UBC Thunderbirds 58-3 on Sunday in Canada West women's rugby action in Vancouver.
Â
"We came out a bit flat and we didn't get our shoulders on the ball for our tackles and Alberta out-rucked us," said UBC head coach Lesley McKenzie.
Â
"The Pandas are very good in the off-load and we didn't make the kind of tackles that would stop an off-load game. I thought we were better at it in the second half."
Â
UBC's lone points came off the foot of
Catherine Ohler (Calgary), who kicked a first-half penalty goal.
Louise Chavarie (17th and 43rd minute), Jen Cousineau (24th and 28th) and Paige Farries (53rd and 70th) all recorded two tries for Alberta, while Chelsea Guthrie, Stacie Becker, Sara Harin and Carmen Hobbs added one each.
Â
Rebecca Fairbairn kicked four conversions.
Guthrie got Alberta on the scoreboard as she found open space down the left sideline to record the opening try, and ultimately, the game-winning points. The Pandas missed the conversion and led 5-0.
Â
UBC was able to respond when Ohler nailed a penalty goal from about 28 metres out in the 15th minute. The kick cut the Thunderbirds' deficit to 5-3.
Â
But Alberta scored less than two minutes later as Chavarie's first try of the game started a run of four Pandas' tries in just 11 minutes.
Â
The visitors led 29-3 at halftime, which came early because of a serious injury to UBC player,
Tanya Bennet (Toronto). She was taken to Vancouver General Hospital. Her condition is not known at this time.
Â
Alberta added five more tries in the second half.
Â
UBC falls to 0-3 on the season. The team will have two weeks off before hosting provincial rivals Victoria on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Vancouver. The game will likely decide which school will grab the final Canada West playoff spot.
Â
Alberta (2-0) sweeps its season-opening swing through BC and will wrap up the regular season with games at Calgary and Lethbridge two weeks from now.
