The UBC Thunderbirds continued their undefeated start to the season, defeating the Victoria Vikes 4-1 on Saturday to put a damper on UVIC's homecoming weekend celebrations.
Hannah Haughn scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the way.
The game started off with UVIC pressuring but the Thunderbirds held their ground. After a few penalty corners were unsuccessful, Haughn's assist on a Cassandra Taylor goal in the 32nd minute opened the scoring.
Haughn scored in short order after that, potting an unassisted marker in the 35th minute to send the Thunderbirds into the break with a two goal lead.
UBC came out of the half with their momentum still intact, as Haughn found the net after a pass from Shanlee Johnson in the 47th minute.
UVIC threatened a late come back with a momentum-shifting goal in the 49th minute by Kyla Kirby, but goalkeeper
Bea Francisco shut the door at that point. Francisco was making her first appearance of the season in net, spelling
Alexandra Bland after two solid outings.
Katherine Gillis added an insurance marker in the 68th minute to seal the victory.
UBC welcomed several key players back from the Pan American Junior Championships, where the Canadian team placed second. The group were unavailable for the season opening sweep of Calgary, but their return, specifically the return of Haughn, paid dividends.
The Thunderbirds and Vikes had both beaten Calgary in a pair of games to start the season, making this two-game set a critical one for the Canada West standings.
The win gives UBC sole possession of first at 3-0 and drops UVIC to 2-1 heading into Sunday's rematch at 11 a.m. at Victoria.
