VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team will begin its quest for a sixth straight Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) title in Hawaii.
The team will conduct training in preparation for the Vulcan Classic volleyball tournament, hosted by the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
"This trip is an excellent opportunity for us to get our team together before the busy start of the school year," said UBC head coach
Doug Reimer. "We are looking forward to the chance to jump start our year by playing in the tournament in Hilo and the training prior to that event."
UBC will spend a couple of days on Oahu before heading over to Hilo.
At the Vulcan Classic, UBC will face three NCAA Division II squads. The first game will be on Friday, Aug. 31 versus Augustana College of South Dakota at 5 p.m.
The second match will feature the T-Birds playing against the host Vulcans of Hawaii Hilo with the first serve scheduled for 1 p.m.
The team will then have to re-group quickly for a 5 p.m. game against Nebraska-Kearney.
All three matches will feature
live statistics.
This will be the first of two pre-season trips for UBC as the team will also head to Quebec in October.
"I know from talking to veteran players past preseason trips, for example to Korea two years ago, were great for the new players joining the team to get to know everyone and valuable for everyone as great team bonding," said Reimer.
The team's regular season opener will be Friday, Oct. 26 at home against Trinity Western.
