VANCOUVER –
Blake Carruthers hit a pair of homers and
Andrew Firth rounded out a dominant weekend at the plate with a total of 10 hits, as the UBC Thunderbirds finshed the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of the Patten Lions, taking game one 7-2 and game two 8-0 in Oakland, Calif.
Firth, who had six hits including a 5-5 game on Friday, continued to swing a hot bat with three more hits and two RBI in game one on Saturday to help the 'Birds take an early 4-0 lead.
The Lions pulled two back on rookie starter
Alex Graham in the third, but he managed to hang in for five solid innings before giving way to reliever
Connor Smith.
Catcher
Brody Hawkins also had three hits in the game to jumpstart the offence, and Carruthers supplied the power with his third home run of the year.
Matt Trimble took to the mound in game two and shut the Lions out over six innings, allowing just four hits.
Tavis Bruce took over in the seventh and maintained the shutout to help the 'Birds improve to 20-12 in the conference and 27-17 overall.
Firth got the scoring started with an RBI double in the first. He put up some gaudy numbers in the series, totalling 10 hits, eight RBI and two homers.
Carruthers also went deep again for a two-run shot, giving him four homers on the year.Â

Ryan Taylor all had three-hit ball games for the 'Birds.
Rookie
Vincent Ching got the start at second base for UBC and got his first career RBI on a sac fly.
The T-Birds have the No. 2 seed for next week's NAIA West Regional Tournament, which runs May 2-4 in Portland, Ore. The winner of the five-team tournament gets an automatic bid to the NAIA World Series.
