VANCOUVER –
Jesslyn Hodge and
Brittany Meyer both drove in four runs to lead the UBC Thunderbirds softball team to a 12-4 win over the Great Falls (Mont.) Lady Argos at the SFU Invitational in Burnaby on Saturday afternoon.
Both players did the bulk of their damage in the decisive second inning as the Thunderbirds recorded seven runs.
Â
With the bases loaded,
Tayla Westgard singled to left field to open the scoring. Two batters later, Meyer stepped to the plate and drove a double to centre, bringing home three runners.
Â
Then after a
Carlyn Shimizu walk, and Westgard still on base, Hodge nailed a home run over the right field fence to make it 7-0 for UBC.
Hodge now has seven runs batted in over the last three games.
Â
Kelli O'Brien got Great Falls on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning but UBC tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth as
Lindsay McElroy got an RBI single while
Molly Gosnell scored on an attempted double steal.
Â
Meyer, Shimizu and Hodge knocked in a run reach in the top of the fifth inning to round out the Thunderbird scoring as the game ended early because of a mercy rule.
Â
Pitcher
Alana Westerhof got the win for UBC after giving up two runs in 3.2 innings. Casey Olson took the loss for Great Falls.
Â
The Thunderbirds (13-22-1) have now won three straight games, all against the Lady Argos. UBC's second game of the day, against the host Simon Fraser Clan, was cancelled because of rain. The T-Birds will face Great Falls again on Sunday at 2 p.m. before finally meeting the Clan at 4 p.m. at Beedie Field in Burnaby.
