Thunderbirds drop two in Burnaby

VANCOUVER – A three-game winning streak by the UBC Thunderbirds softball team was halted on Sunday after two losses at the SFU Invitational in Burnaby.

"Our bats dried up today," said UBC head coach Phil Thom.

In Game 1, UBC dropped a 5-3 decision to the Great Falls (Mont.) Argos, a team the Thunderbirds had beaten three times in the past couple of days.

After a Cassandra Dypchey sacrifice fly to left field tied the game at 3-3 for UBC in the bottom of the sixth, the Argos replied with two runs in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Alyse Sifuentes singled to centre field off UBC starter Jamie Randall to score two for Great Falls.

The Lady Argos opened the scoring by putting three runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Kayeley Lyons knocked a double into centre field to bring home all three runners.

UBC answered right away, scoring twice. Catcher Lindsay McElroy drove a single up the middle to score first baseman Dypchey and shortstop Jesslyn Hodge with two outs.

McElroy led UBC with two RBI's, while Dypchey had the other.  They were two of just four Thunderbirds players to record a hit against Great Falls pitcher, Sifuentes. Randall pitched all seven innings for UBC was still forced to take the loss after giving up five runs.

In Game 2, UBC was shutout 8-0 by host Simon Fraser.

Dypchey and center fielder Brittany Meyer were the only T-Birds with hits, as UBC drops to 13-24-1 this season. They will have a long 23-day break before they face the Clan again, this time in a doubleheader at Richmond's London Park.
