VANCOUVER – The No. 3 UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end in Abbotsford as the home team, Fraser Valley Cascades, scored a 65-57 victory on Friday night.
"We were not at our best tonight and had difficulty finding any offensive flow or finish in the second half," said UBC head coach
Deb Huband. "We need to be better and we have a chance to rebound for a better showing tomorrow."
The Thunderbird offence stalled in the final half of the fourth quarter as Fraser Valley ended the game on a 10-2 run.
UBC took a 48-46 lead into the fourth and the two teams were tied at 55 midway through the period.
The game was closely contested the entire way with UBC taking a slim 39-35 lead into halftime after the two squads finished the first quarter knotted at 18.
The Thunderbirds got 12 points each from
Kris Young (2nd, North Vancouver, BC),
Zara Huntley (5th, Halifax, NS) and
Alex Vieweg (5th, North Vancouver, BC).
Leigh Stansfield (4th, Victoria, BC) chipped in with 11 points.
Fraser Valley's leading scorer was Aieisha Luyken, who recorded 17 points.
The Thunderbirds outrebounded the Cascades 41-31 but UFV shooters knocked down eight three-pointers compared to just two for the visitors.
UBC (12-3) shot 38.6 percent in tonight's game while UFV (11-5) was slightly better at 40.7 percent.
Tonight's win is the first-ever by UFV over UBC since the Cascades joined the Canada West for the 2006-07 season. The T-Birds record against the Cascades is now 15-1 over the last six seasons, inlcuding playoffs.
The top two teams in the Canada West's Pacific Division will face off again on Saturday in Abbotsford, starting at 5 p.m.
