VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds came up just short in their only game on day two of the Lewis-Clark State College Guardian Tournament, giving up two different three-run leads en route to a 7-6 loss to the host L-C State Warriors.
The 'Birds got three runs in the first inning thanks to a couple singles and a Warriors error.
Miles Verweel was in command for his first three innings on the mound, but the Warriors got to him for three runs in the fourth to tie it up.
UBC quickly restored a three-run cushion in the top half of the next inning on an
Andrew Firth RBI single and a
Jerod Bartnik double that cashed in two more. But again it was a short-lived lead, as the Warriors chased Verwheel early in the fifth before tacking on two more runs in the inning,Â
LC State added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to go up 7-6, and the T-Birds couldn't muster another salvo in response. UBC left two runners on in both the seventh and eighth innings but couldn't cash anyone in against the Warriors' reliever duo of Garret Tygerson and Sal Arena, who threw a combined 4.2 innings of scoreless ball.
Nathan Kirby took the loss for UBC, giving up two runs in 2.2 innings of relief.
Bartnik and Firth both had two hits on the day. UBC also got RBIs from
Mike Hole and
Austin Fruson.
Despite the loss, the T-Birds finished the round-robin portion of the four-team tournament in second place at 2-1, earning them another shot at the Warriors on Sunday in the tournament title game. UBC and LC State square off tomorrow at 2 p.m.
