VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team held off a late charge by the Brock Badgers to win 69-59 in the first game for both schools at the 20th annual Alberta Pandas HoopFest Friday in Edmonton.

Adrienne Parkin (Vancouver, BC) hit two foul shots with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter to put UBC up 62-44. But in just 1:10, Brock scored 15 of the next 16 points close to within two buckets. In that late run, the Badgers hit three shots from behind the three-point arc.
UBC was able to recover in time to hit four late foul shots to go along with a
Victoria Spangehl (Surrey, BC) layup to win by 10 points.
The Thunderbirds led by 18 points twice. They used a 12-2 run that bridged the last two quarters to hold a 53-35 advantage early in the final period.
The game was tied 25-25 after a Brock layup with 3:19 to go in the first half, but UBC then went on an extended 16-3 run that was finally halted halfway through the third quarter. Spangehl started the run with a rare triple and finished it with a steal and layup. She ended the night with 13 points.
“It was a solid team effort today with much improved team play offensively and defensively,” said UBC head coach
Deb Huband. “It is encouraging to see the growth since last weekend with our young team.”
Kris Young (North Vancouver, BC) led the T-Birds with 17 points and seven rebounds while forward
Leigh Stansfield (Victoria, BC) also had seven rebounds while recording 16 points.
UBC struggled from the three-point line, hitting just one of 17 shots, but the team dominated under the glass, out-rebounding Brock 46-28.
The Thunderbirds also 41.8 percent from the field and made 12 of 17 foul shots. The Badgers' figures were 39.3 percent and 11-20, respectively.
UBC will play Western at 2 p.m. Pacific time at the Pandas HoopFest and will finish off the three-game event with a matchup against host Alberta on Sunday afternoon.
