Coming off an impressive 4-2 victory on Friday night, the 'Birds went in search of the full four points Saturday. It was scoreless after 20 minutes with Calgary outshooting UBC 8-6.
Things got going quick in the second period courtesy of Tyler Fiddler. The Dinos forward scored 15 seconds into the frame to put the home side up 1-0. Just over three minutes later the Thunderbirds responded with the second goal in as many nights from
Scott MacDonald (Surrey, BC).
Cole Pruden (Winnipeg, MB) potted his first goal of the season to give UBC their first lead of the night, 2-1. The Thunderbirds were not done there as
Scott Wasden (West Kelowna, BC) continued his hot play with a power play goal with 4:45 remaining in the period to put UBC ahead 3-1. It was Wasden's third goal in the weekend series. The Dinos though would respond before the period out as Cory Pritz beat
Steven Stanford (Calgary, AB) to cut the lead to 3-2 through 40 minutes of play.
The Thunderbirds put themselves behind the eight ball early in the third period, taking three straight penalties. Calgary would capitalize on two of them as Tyler Fiddler and Brock Nixon scored back to back power play goals to put Calgary up 4-3. The Dinos were not done there, Kevin King and Fiddler scored 1:07 apart to extend the lead to 6-3 for Calgary. For Fiddler it was his third goal of the game and sixth of the season. That would spell the end of the night for Stanford, who stopped 25 of 31 shots he faced. He was replaced by
Jordan White (Surrey, BC).
Jessi Hilton (Sherwood Park, AB) would make things interesting with his first goal of the season to get the 'Birds back within two, but Walker Wintoneak would add an empty netter to make it a 7-4 final. It is the first regulation loss of the season for UBC.
The Thunderbirds record now stands at 2-1-1, while the Dinos are 3-1-0.
UBC finished the night 1-for-5 on the power play, while Calgary went 3-for-6.
