VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team dominated its first match in the SSQ Challenge by sweeping host Laval 3-0.

UBC won by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-22.
Shanice Marcelle (Victoria, BC) recorded 11 kills and 14 digs, leading the Thunderbirds in both categories.
Rosie Schlagintweit (Abbotsford, BC) knocked down 10 kills and had a sparkling .409 attack percentage.
Lisa Barclay (Brandon, MB) also chipped in with 13 digs.
"It was a solid team effort, as I thought we played with good poise for this point of the season and were steady both offensively and defensively," said UBC head coach
Doug Reimer. "Shanice was very solid in both the front and back court and I thought
Briana Liau Kent had a strong match for us as well in the libero position."
UBC's excellent defence was on full display as the team had 9.5 team blocks compared to Laval's three.
The T-Birds also held the Rouge et Or to a negative attack percentage in the first two sets.
Catherine Laurin had the most kills for Laval with eight, while Sophie Dallaire and Eve Thibault both had 10 digs.
The same teams will meet again on Saturday at 3 p.m. Pacific.
