VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's basketball team scored an exciting 74-69 victory over the host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks tonight at the Hawk Challenge tournament in Waterloo, Ont.
BOXSCORE
Two foul shots from
Doug Plumb (Pitt Meadows, BC) with just eight seconds left in the game finally sealed a UBC victory as his two shots put the Thunderbirds up 72-69.
O'Brian Wallace (Toronto, ON) sank two more free throws with no time left to round out the scoring.
Plumb led all players with 22 points while Wallace chipped in with 16 points and a team-high six rebounds. Rookie
Isaiah Solomon (Richmond, BC) had 11 points.
UBC trailed 39-37 at the half but the T-Birds never trailed again after
Brylle Kamen (Paris, France) opened the third quarter with a jump shot. UBC, though, couldn't shake off Laurier either.
A Solomon jumper at 4:01 of the third quarter put UBC up 53-46 but the next bucket was a three-pointer by Laurier's Patrick Donnelly.
The Golden Hawks closed to within a point on four separate occasions after that but the T-Birds' defence held strong while the offence came up with a big response each time the home team got close.
Donnelly and Maxwell Allin recorded 16 points each to pace Laurier.
UBC will play its second and final game at the Hawk Challenge on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific as it will face the Guelph Gryphons.
The T-Birds will then return home to prepare for more Ontario opposition. They host the York Lions in a non-conference game on Sunday, Oct. 21 at War Memorial Gymnasium.
