VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team opens a three-game Quebec tour today with a match at the Université de Montréal against the Carabins.
The first serve is at 4 p.m. Pacific.
“It has been a long break since we played before the start of school and I hope we are ready to go against a Montreal team that will be very strong this year," said UBC head coach
Doug Reimer.
The two squads faced off seven months ago at the 2012 CIS Women's Volleyball Championship in Hamilton, Ontario.
UBC beat Montréal 3-1 in the semi-finals to clinch a spot in the national championship game.
After tonight, the T-Birds will to Quebec City for two games against Université Laval on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13.
“We hosted them last year and I have found it is more interesting for our team to have some non-conference matches against quality teams from other regions,” said Reimer. “I think it will be an interesting weekend as we return to play in the venue and against the team from the national championships of 2011."
That year, UBC beat Laval on its home court in straight sets to win the school's fourth CIS title in a row and eighth overall.
“This trip gets us the chance to compete against both Laval And Montreal who have been the dominant teams from Québec in the last number of years and always competitive at national championships,” said Reimer.
UBC started the season with a trip to Hawaii. The team finished 2-1 at the Vulcan Classic, losing to Nebraska Kearney after beating Augustana College and the host school, Hawaii Hilo.
