VANCOUVER – The No. 3 UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team won its sixth game in a row by beating the host University of Winnipeg Wesmen 65-49 on Saturday.
Leading 21-16 in the second quarter, UBC used 19-2 run that bridged halftime to break the game open.
"Our defence was outstanding for a large part of the game,” said UBC head coach
Deb Huband. “These were important wins on the road and the team responded well to the travel over the past four games in back to back weekends. We will welcome the opportunity to play at home next weekend in the comfort of War Memorial Gymnasium.”
For the second straight night, the Thunderbirds held their opponent under 20 points in the first half, as UBC led 32-18 at the break.
UBC once again got balanced scoring from its starting line up.
Zara Huntley (5th, Halifax, NS) led UBC with 18 points and five rebounds.
Alex Vieweg (5th, North Vancouver, BC) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, six of them on offence.
Kris Young (2nd, North Vancouver, BC) recorded a double-double with ten points and 11 assists, while
Leigh Stansfield (4th, Victoria, BC) had nine points and six rebounds.
"It was special to see Kris earn a double-double with assists," said Huband. "She sees the floor very well and made some exceptional plays again tonight our on court team chemistry continues to grow."
UBC improves to 10-2 in Canada West conference play and will return home to host the UBC Okanagan Heat next weekend.
Winnipeg falls to 8-6, temporarily out of a playoff position in the Prairie Division of the Canada West. The Wesmen will play at Regina next weekend.
