VANCOUVER - A 15-0 second quarter run proved decisive as the No. 3 UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team scored a 74-58 victory over the host Thompson Rivers WolfPack in Kamloops on Friday night.
"We were very strong defensively for three quarters and built a solid lead into the final frame," said UBC head coach
Deb Huband. "We had a significant run in the second with leadership from our starters and contributions off the bench. We are looking forward to continuing to improve our execution and team play in tomorrow night's game."
That second quarter run began with UBC ahead 18-17 with 7:35 to go before halftime.
Kris Young (2nd, North Vancouver, BC) sank two free throws to get the Thunderbirds started.
With contributions from starters like
Alex Vieweg (5th, North Vancouver, BC) (two baskets) and
Zara Huntley (5th, Halifax, NS) as well as rookies like
Adrienne Parkin (1st, Vancouver, BC),
Cassandra Knievel (1st, Nanaimo, BC) and
Stephanie Bell (1st, North Vancouver, BC), the Thunderbirds quickly built a 33-17 lead.
Another 14-2 UBC run in the third quarter put the game away and gave the Thunderbird (7-2) their third straight regular season victory.
Four UBC players scored at least ten points, with Huntley leading the way with 18 and eight rebounds, while Young added 16 points and recorded six steals.
Diane Schuetze recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds for TRU (5-6).
UBC forced 27 WolfPack turnovers and kept the home team to just 33.8 percent shooting.
The T-Birds shot 46.7 percent from the field themselves.
The same two teams will meet up again in Kamloops on Saturday, with the opening tip at 5 p.m.
