VANCOUVER – The UBC women's field hockey team will play its first two home games of the year this weekend as the Canada West-leading Calgary Dinos come to town.
The games will take place Saturday and Sunday at Wright Field on campus. Game time is 1 p.m. on both days.
UBC Thunderbirds
Record: 1-1
Last week: lost to Alberta 1-0, beat Alberta 2-0
UBC is coming off a two-game split at Alberta. The Pandas won the first game of the season 1-0 before the Thunderbirds bounced back with a 2-0 win on Sunday.
Rookie
Sarah Keglowitsch (Shawnigan Lake, B.C.) got her first-ever goal in a UBC uniform on Sunday as she opened the scoring against Alberta in the seventh minute.
Then in the 16th minute,
Miranda Mann (Duncan, B.C.) scored off a penalty corner.
Goalkeeper
Bea Francisco (Richmond, B.C.) recorded the shutout.
The longer turf at Edmonton's Foote Field was tough for the UBC team to play on.
"We didn't get a chance to see where we were really at," said UBC head coach Hash Kanjee. "The second day, there was certainly some character that showed, which I was happy about, but we really didn't get to do some of the set plays, work the ball out the way we normally can and so the players are all excited about what they're able to do this weekend.
The team will also have
Natalie Sourisseau (Kelowna, B.C.) and
Sara McManus (Delta, B.C.) back in the line up this week, after missing the game against Alberta.
"I want to see where the team is at," said Kanjee. "I want to see where some of our shortcomings are and see where our strengths are and build from that."
Calgary Dinos
Record: 2-0
Last week: beat Victoria 2-0, 3-1
CALGARY - The hosts of this year's national championship, the Dinos got off to a fantastic start by sweeping Victoria to open the 2011 season.
Calgary blanked Victoria, 2-0 in the first of two games last weekend.
Then All-Canadian Courtney Campbell scored twice in a 3-1 Calgary win on Sunday.
Last year, UBC played Calgary four times during the Canada West regular season. The Thunderbirds won three of those meetings; the other was a tie.
