EDMONTON – The UBC Thunderbirds women's field hockey team rebounded from a season-opening loss yesterday to defeat the University of Alberta Pandas, 2-0, this afternoon at Edmonton's Foote Field.
"We knew we could play better than we did yesterday and we came out with a lot more intensity and a lot more desire today," said UBC head coach Hash Kanjee. "A lot of kids had very, very good performances. The entire team had a strong game, even the young players. The young ones showed themselves really well."
Rookie
Sarah Keglowitsch (Shawnigan Lake, BC) scored in the seventh minute with an assist to
Poonam Sandhu (Vancouver, BC).
Then in the 16th minute,
Miranda Mann (Duncan, BC) recorded her first goal of the year off a penalty corner.
Goalkeeper
Bea Francisco (Richmond, BC) got the shutout in goal.
Kanjee says the team's defence played a huge part in holding Alberta off the scoreboard.
"They kept it simple and kept the ball out of our end and allowed us to have lots of chances at Alberta's end," said Kanjee.
UBC (1-1) will now return home to face the Canada West-leading Calgary Dinos (2-0) next weekend at Wright Field, with games on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
