STAYTON, OR - The change of venue suited the UBC Thunderbirds just fine on Friday, as they picked up victories of 17-1 and 4-1 over the Corban College Warriors at Joe Brock Park.
Originally scheduled for Warrior Field in Salem, the games were moved to the turf playing surface at Stayton High School due to poor weather conditions all week in the Willamette Valley.
Saturday's doubleheader has been postponed and will be played when Corban visits UBC at the beginning of April.
On Friday, six T-Birds had at least two RBI.
Nick Senior led the way with a 3-for-4 performance out of the ninth batter's spot and added four RBI and four runs scored. UBC's first four batters benefited from Senior's big day as they each knocked in a pair of runs. Lead-off man
Sebastian Wong had a team-high five hits.
Corban actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before UBC scored 17 runs over the next six innings. They put up four runs in each the second, fifth, and sixth innings.
Sheldon McDonald got the win going five innings, giving up just the one run while striking out five.
Shawn Hetherington and
David Otterman each pitched two solid innings in relief.
In the day's second contest, Corban once again jumped out to a 1-0 lead - this time in the bottom of the second. UBC tied the contest in the top of the fifth before a three run outburst in the sixth courtesy in large part to a two-run Senior home run.
Kevin Nickel and
Bob Foerster had the squad's other RBI.
Eric Brown went a complete seven innings for the win, striking out five and surrendering just a pair of hits.
UBC opens their home schedule next weekend when they host LC State. The first game of that series is 2:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. and the finale on Sunday is at 11:00 a.m.
