PORTLAND, OR -
Luke Webster pitched his UBC Thunderbirds out of a jam in the opening game of a doubleheader against Concordia on Saturday, leading UBC to a sweep of the Cavaliers with wins of 2-1 and 7-2 on the afternoon.
With UBC holding on to a tenuous 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth, Webster came into the contest with the bases loaded and one out. He got a fly-out and a strikeout to end the inning and then earned the save with another solid effort in the ninth.
Sheldon McDonald got the win going seven innings and allowing six hits and two walks while striking out five.
Shawn Hetherington gave up one unearned run in one-third of an inning of work.
Blake Carruthers hit a solo home run for the 'Birds with their only other hit in the first game a double from
Keaton Briscoe. UBC scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Concordia got one back in the eighth, and totaled eight hits in the game, before Webster shut the door.
"We didn't get on track at the plate in the first game but the story was
Luke Webster coming in that tough situation and getting us out of it. Sheldon was very good once again while we struggled with our hitting," said UBC head coach
Terry McKaig.
In the day's second tilt, UBC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and then put the game away with four runs in the seventh and final inning.
Eric Brown went a complete game for the 'Birds, allowing five hits, one earned run, and striking out seven.
Carruthers once again paced the T-Birds at the dish, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run. UBC put up 10 hits to just five for Concordia, with three of those courtesy of DH
Kevin Nickel. Briscoe also figured prominently with a pair of hits and three runs scored.
