SANTRA CLARITA, CA - The UBC Thunderbirds picked up their second win in as many days on their pre-season road trip through California, downing the Master's College 7-3 on Wednesday.
"It was another complete game in all three facets. We got some run support early and then did a good job manufacturing some runs as the game went on," said UBC head coach
Terry McKaig.
For the second consecutive game, the T-Birds (3-3) jumped out to an early lead. They put up three runs in the first inning with leadoff man
Sebastian Wong continuing his hot start, picking up one of his two on the afternoon in UBC's opening at bat.
Kevin Nickel followed with a double and then
Keaton Briscoe walked to load the bases. A wild pitch plated Wong before a sacrifice fly from
Blake Carruthers and a
Nick Senior single added a run each.
"Sebastian has really made a big impact the last three games for us. He's getting his first playing time at UBC after red-shirting last season. Having our lead-off guy get on has been huge for our offence," added McKaig.
Miles Verweel, getting the first start of his UBC career, went five strong innings allowing six hits, two earned runs and stuck out three batters.
Andrew Ledger worked the last four innings, earning the long save by conceding just a pair of hits and a single run.
"Miles really did a good job for us today in his first start going five innings. Andrew followed up with another strong performance and he looks ready to have a big year for us," noted McKaig.
Wong led UBC with a pair of hits with one RBI and scored twice while Carruthers had a team high three RBI, including his first home run of the season, on the afternoon.
UBC continues their swing through California with a tilt against Westmont College on Thursday.
