IRVINE, CA - The no. 10 ranked UBC Thunderbirds dropped their third game in a row on Sunday, falling 16-8 to the Concordia (Calif.) Eagles. UBC head coach
Terry McKaig quickly diagnosed his team's problem which has been a recurring theme so far in the pre-season trip through California.
"We started slow once again. When you do that game in, game out it's going to be hard to pick up a lot of wins. This trip is tough as we are facing a lot of teams number one pitchers but we aren't even giving ourselves a chance right now," said McKaig. "That being said, we still need to be patient as its early in the year and facing some adversity now will only help us get better later in the season."
Concordia scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to open up a 4-0 lead. They extended that lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth before UBC finally made some inroads with a single in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth. The Eagles put the game away with eight runs in the eighth before UBC scored three times in the ninth to round out the scoring.
Starter
Brandon Kaye gave up three runs and five hits over three innings and five other T-Bird pitchers each went a single inning.
Dave Forbes was on the mound in the eighth for UBC but all eight runs were unearned due to a couple of errors in the field.
Sebastian Won and
Matt Spillman each had a pair of hits for UBC while
Kevin Nickel and
Graeme Carey each had two RBIs.
UBC continues their trip through California with a game against Redlands on February 15th. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
