The UBC Thunderbirds (4-0) women's volleyball team swept past the UBC Okanagan Heat (1-3) in Kelowna tonight in three sets.
The Thunderbirds dominated the first set with a 25-18 victory against the host Heat.
Their control of the court continued in the second set with a 25-12 win. At one point, the two teams were tied at 8 apiece before UBC ended the set on a 17-4 run.
That momentum continued into the third and ultimately, final set, as the Thunderbirds opened on a 9-3 spurt. UBC built on the lead to take the set by a score of 25-16.
"I thought we had good play and leadership from both of our fifth year players," said UBC head coach
Doug Reimer. "Rayel (Quiring) had a good night attacking and passing and Kyla (Richey) has been playing very good defence and blocking well. I was pleased with the efforts of all the players that played tonight as we wer able to go deeper unto the bench."
UBC outside hitter Richey (5th, Roberts Creek, BC) dominated with 11 kills out of 29 total attacks and a .276 average. Outside hitter Quiring (5th, Langley, BC) managed eight kills from 14 total attacks with no errors, giving her a .571 average.
UBC Okanagan setter Chandler Proch (1st, Kelowna, BC) attempted to steer the Heat's efforts against the Thunderbirds with 20 assists and 2 kills. Outside hitter Alex Basso (4th, Kelowna, BC) led the Heat with seven kills.
The Thunderbirds continue their perfect start to the 2011-12 season. The team will have a bye week before its first home game of the season on Nov. 18 against the University of Saskatchewan at War Memorial Gym.
UBC Okanagan's next games will be on the road at the University of Manitoba next weekend.
