VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds scored runs in all but four of their turns at bat in Friday's doubleheader against the Corban College Warriors, winning by scores of 18-1 and 9-1 at Thunderbird Park to improve to 23-6 on the year.
It took the T-Birds just three batters to put their first run on the board in game one, as
Nic Lendvoy drove in leadoff man
Keaton Briscoe with a sac fly. It turned out to be one of their least productive innings of the game however, as that was their only run of the opening frame, and they added at least two runs for each of the next six innings.
It was Lendvoy again who opened the flood gates with a bases-clearing two-out double in the second. After that, the only thing that could slow down the T-Birds' offence was mother nature. Relentless wind and rain caused a 20 minute delay in game two with the T-Birds already up 5-1 in the fourth inning, but when they got back to action they tagged on another four runs in their last three at bats of the seven-inning affair.
"It was nine guys in the lineup getting big hits and nobody really jumps out at me," said UBC head coach
Terry McKaig. "We had a really balanced attack today and that's what we need because we don't have those big boppers batting three-four-five who are going to always carry us. We need the bottom of the order to score, which they did today, so overall, a really good job by everybody."
Lendvoy led the assault with five RBIs on the day.
Sean Pisarski also had a solid day at the dish, with six hits and three RBIs.
Bob Foerster and
Alex White each had four RBIs. The T-Birds out-hit the Warriors 32-11 on the day, and 10 different players picked up at least one RBI.
"The hitters spent a lot of time doing video work," said McKaig. "It's our second time around against Corban so our hitters watched video on their pitchers and studied the charts and stuff so I think we were a lot more prepared than we normally are."
Things also went well on the mound for the home side.
Eric Brown picked up the win in game one, going six innings and striking out five while allowing one run on seven hits.
Matt Bannister and
Jordan Herbison combined for the final three scoreless innings of game one.
Sheldon McDonald won game two, allowing one run over four innings before having his outing cut short by the rain delay. Dan Britton-Foster was perfect the rest of the way, throwing three scoreless innings with no walks or hits.
Jacob Kopra was hit with the loss for Corban in game one, and Craig Baker lost game two. Kyle Kunkel and Luke Balbas accounted for the Warriors' two RBIs. Corban drops to 8-22 on the season.
The T-Birds and Warriors will be back at Thunderbird Park for another doubleheader on Sunday, with game one starting at 11 a.m.
