SALEM, OR - Even some crazy last minute scheduling changes couldn't stop the UBC Thunderbirds winning streak which hit double digits on Friday as they downed Corban College 8-3 and 9-2 in a conference double header at Volcanoes Ballpark in Salem, OR.
The location switch came late in the week as Corban's outfield was under water but it didn't slow down UBC who picked up their 10th and 11th straight wins to run their to 12-1 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.
"It was two very complete games for us today. We played really, really well," said UBC skipper
Terry McKaig. "The first game was close until the ninth but this is what this team has done so well this season - we take advantage of our opportunities."
With ace
Mark Hardy on the hill, the T-Birds raced out to a 3-0 lead through three innings. Corban responded with two in bottom of the fifth before UBC made it 4-2 in the top of the sixth.
Corban got one more back in the bottom of the sixth before UBC put it away with four runs in the ninth thanks in large part to a
Sammie Starr bases clearing double.
Nic Lendvoy had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI with
Blake Carruthers and
Andrew Firth also knocking in runs.
Hardy was his usual self, going seven innings giving up seven hits, three runs (two earned), and striking out five.
Shawn Hetherington got the save with two hitless innings of work.
The T-Birds put away the second half of the double header, a seven-inning affair, early with four runs apiece in the top of the third and fourth to go along with a single tally in the first.
Keaton Briscoe had a grand slam in the fourth inning to cap off an outstanding performance at the plate as the first year went 3-of-4 with three runs scored and five batted in.
Mike Elias was 1-of-2 in game two with his three run homer fueling the T-Birds big third inning. Lendvoy added an RBI for the T-Birds to finish with four on the day.
Eric Brown went six innings giving up only four hits and two runs while sitting down four Corban batters.
Miles Verweel went a spotless seventh inning and earned a rare feat, striking out four batters in one inning of work. One of the Corban players reached base due to a passed ball.
The two teams meet again on Saturday with the doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Brandon Kaye and
Sheldon McDonald are scheduled to start for the T-Birds.
