WHITTIER, CA - The no. 13 ranked UBC Thunderbirds (6-1) ended their pre-season road trip through California with an 11-6 victory over Whittier College by way of a five run 10th inning.
Tied 6-6 heading into extra innings, the T-Birds exploded for five runs in the top of the frame.
Nic Lendvoy put UBC ahead right away in the inning, hitting a solo homer over the wall in right field.
Mike Elias followed with a double, before a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts, loaded the bases with two outs.
Greg Densem then doubled down the line to score a pair before
Keaton Briscoe followed with two RBI single. Briscoe was thrown out trying to end the inning as he tried to stretch his single into a double.
Taylor King got the win, working a near perfect final two innings, getting a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the tenth.
It was a back and forth game all afternoon, as UBC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first only to see Whittier tie it in the bottom of the frame. The 'Birds re-took the lead in the top of the second but Whittier again drew level, this time in the third. The fourth saw each team put up a run and then UBC took a 6-4 lead in the top of the fifth. The hosts drew level with a pair in the bottom of the seventh to round out the scoring before the tenth.
The T-Birds used six pitchers on the day with none going more than two innings. They combined to give up eight hits while striking out 14.
Briscoe and Starr led the UBC offence with three hits apiece as the T-Birds racked up 13 in the game. UBC's first four batters in Briscoe, Starr, Lendvoy, and Elias also combined to drive in seven of UBC's 11 runs.
The T-Birds have a couple of days off before beginning their conference schedule this weekend with a pair of double headers against Simpson University on the road.
