KELLOG, Idaho – The UBC Thunderbirds followed up their hot start to the alpine skiing season with another solid showing in a series of giant slalom races at Silver Mountain in Kellog, Idaho.
On Saturday, the women narrowly took second place behind the College of Idaho by 0.8 of a second.
Emma Beattie continued her winning streak racing to a first-place finish by a one-second margin. Teammates
Kari Geier,
Tobias Britton and
Meghan McLeod followed in 10th, 13th and 14th place respectively.
On the men's side,
Matt Bunston took first place yet again, 0.3 seconds ahead of fellow T-Bird
Ben Middleton. Veteran
Alexander Matheson rounded out the top five as the team finished five seconds ahead of of Whitman College to take the team title on day one.
Sunday featured similar results with the women's team just missing top spot while the men easily cruised to their second straight team title with a podium sweep.
Whitman College edged out the women's team by a margin of only 0.1 of a second. Beattie once again finished first, two seconds ahead of the next best skier. Geier was eighth, Britton took 11th and McLeod finished 12th.
The T-Bird men dominated the field, notching the three fastest times of the day. Bunston, Middleton and Matheson took the podium, putting them six seconds ahead of the second place Whitman College.
The T-Birds are off to Mission Ridge in Wenatchee, Wash., next weekend for their second slalom race of the season.
