BURNABY - The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the SFU Clan 70-64 in overtime in a non-conference game Saturday night at SFU's West Gym. It was the first meeting between the two schools since the Clan made the move to the NCAA Division II for the 2010-11 season.
Zara Huntley and
Lia St. Pierre combined for 40 points for the T-Birds to help counter a big game from SFU's Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe who finished with 25 points and 16 rebounds.
St. Pierre tied the game at 60-60 with 2:16 to play in the second half and that turned out to be the final basket as neither squad could convert down the stretch.
In the extra frame, it was UBC's prowess from the line that sent them to the win. After only converting on four of 10 attempts in regulation, the 'Birds were 6-of-9 from the line in overtime. The T-Birds sealed the win with four free throws over the last 30 seconds.
