Leigh Stansfield and
Zara Huntley combined for 33 points as the UBC Thunderbirds inside presence was the difference on Wednesday in their 80-56 win over the McGill Martlets during the quarterfinal round of the Concordia-Reebok Tournament.
The win moves the 'Birds into a semi-final match-up against Queen's who narrowly defeated Bishop's 75-70 on Wednesday. UBC and Queen's tip-off at 3:00 p.m. PT on Thursday while Concordia and Memorial are set to meet in the other semi-final at 5:00 p.m. PT.
UBC led by as many as 12 midway through the second quarter but a late push from the Martlets saw the score 36-30 in favour of the 'Birds at the half.
It was a back and forth start to the third quarter before UBC closed the frame on an 8-1 run to go up 59-48. They carried over that momentum into the fourth, out scoring McGill 21-8 in the final 10 minutes.
Stansfield led the 'Birds with 17 points on a 6-of-8 shooting performance, to go along with a 5-of-7 effort from the free throw line, while Huntley was just as sharp going 7-of-8 to finish with 16 points. UBC also controlled the glass, out rebounding McGill 34-15 and were led by Stansfield and
Lia St. Pierre who each finished with seven boards.
