WINNIPEG - Rookie
Lisa Barclay put on an impressive performance in her home province, leading the no. 6 UBC Thunderbirds to their second straight 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22) win over the no. 10 Winnipeg Wesmen.
Barclay, of Brandon, Man., had 16 kills and only two errors on 37 attacks for a .378 hitting percentage. She also added five digs and a service ace.
Shanice Marcelle also had a big game for UBC (4-2) with 18 kills on .341 hitting and 11 digs with middle
Jessica von Schilling notching nine kills on .412 hitting to go along with one solo block and four block assists.
Winnipeg (1-4) was led by a trio of players with double digit kills. Sonia Rossy had a team-high 15 kills, Carleen Kruschel added 13 and Lauren Sears had 11. As a squad, however, Winnipeg only had double digit kills in one set - the second which they took 25-23.
It may have been Barclay and Marcelle that provided the bulk of the offence, but the duo of von Schilling and
Rayel Quiring had their own impressive performance in the deciding fourth set.
With Winnipeg leading 21-15, the T-Birds went on a 10-1 run to seal the match thanks in large part to Quiring and von Schilling who each tallied three block assists during that stretch.
UBC led from start to finish in the first set, putting away the frame with a three-point run late.
The second set was a tightly contested affair, however, UBC led 20-18 after a von Schilling and Barclay block. Winnipeg responded with a 6-2 run, however, notching five kills during that stretch to take command of the set.
UBC was never threatened in the third and closed the frame with a 4-0 run to set themselves for their come from behind win in the fourth.
The T-Birds return to Winnipeg next weekend to battle the Manitoba Bisons on November 19 and 20.
