WINNIPEG - The UBC Thundebirds lost 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 24-26) to hosts Winnipeg in the bronze medal match at the Les Marc Invitational.
"It's a disappointing result but a good lesson for us moving forward that we need to prepare every day. That's tougher to do on the third day of a tournament, especially after two five setters yesterday, but we should not use that as an excuse."
In today's match against Winnipeg, fifth-year
Lauren Whitehead led UBC with 10 kills with middle Jessica Von Schilling adding seven.
Yesterday, UBC topped Winnipeg 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-13) in their final round robin game thanks to 21 kills from
Shanice Marcelle and 15 form rookie
Rosie Schlagintweit.
Earlier in the day they lost 3-2 (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 15-9) to Manitoba in a rematch of the 2010 CIS national final.
Rookie
Lisa Barclay led UBC with 14 kills while fourth-year
Rayel Quiring counted 11.
UBC is without All-Canadians
Jen Hinze and
Kyla Richey who are not competing with UBC until January as they are members of the Canadian national team that is set to compete at this fall's 2010 World Championships. The 'Birds were also without setter
Brina Derksen-Bergen who is recovering from illness.
This lack of veteran presence allowed a number of younger players to step up and get their first taste of CIS action.
"Overall it was a valuable weekend that gave all our players the chance to compete and learn where we need to get better moving forward," added Reimer.
UBC opens their 2010-11 Canada West season at home on October 29 and 30 against Trinity Western.
