LETHBRIDGE - The UBC Thunderbirds defeated their provincial rivals, the University Victoria Vikes, 26-10 in the bronze medal game at the 2010 Canada West women's rugby final four in Lethbridge.
The game began with no team showing a clear advantage with the majority of play in the first six minutes was between 22 metre lines. The Thunderbirds were the first to find the scoreboard when
Megan Hamm found a lane on the outside. An illegal tackle by the Vikes resulted in a penalty try for the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds found the endzone ten minutes later, when
Radha Jain took the ball from a ruck, drew away the Vike defenders before handing the ball off to
Blaine Lyons who relayed it to a streaking and unmarked
Darcy Patterson along the sideline. Patterson brought the ball in the middle of the endzone to set up the easy convert.
UBC added to their lead a few minutes later on a carbon copy of the previous play, except Jain faked out the defenders by keeping the ball rather than passing, and took a clear path to the endzone. The Vikes answered back five minutes later on a try by Andrea Temple but UBC led by 13 at the break.
Much like in the first half, the beginning of the second half was played largely at midfield. The Vikes were the first team to penetrate through the 22 metre line, and Jesse Olynk promptly scored, bringing the Vikes to within eight of UBC.
The play was intense, but even for the next ten minutes, with both teams having short breaks only to be taken down by the opposing teams' backs. Jain was able to take advantage of a couple of missed tackles to re-establish the Thunderbirds' lead at the 65 minute mark and round out the scoring.
