VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds finished 1-3 during the regular season following a 27-20 loss to the Victoria Vikes in their regular season finale. It was a somewhat disappointing result for the T-Birds who finished fifth at last year's CIS Championship. Despite qualifying as host in 2009, UBC represented themselves well last fall with a close 5-0 loss to No. 3 Guelph the difference between playing for medals and heading to the consolation round in which they beat Western Ontario 27-0.
This weekend they travel to Lethbridge, Alta., as the No. 4 seed at the Canada West Final Four. They meet the host and No. 1-ranked Pronghorns on Friday with the winner advancing to the Canada West championship game on Sunday.
This season UBC was without the services of a number of key graduated players including 2009 captain Michelle Helmezci, but did get a number of standout performances from the likes of
Darcy Patterson,
Radha Jain, and
Megan Hamm.
Patterson leads the team in scoring with a pair of tries, one covert and a penalty goal, however, she came out of UBC's final game with an injury. UBC's scoring efforts have also come via a pair of tries by Gabby Hindley while
Radha Jain,
Carolyn McEwen,
Jennifer Brule, and
Blaine Lyons each have one score to their credit.
The 'Birds opened their season with a 48-7 loss to the No. 1-ranked and defending CIS champion Pronghorns. UBC was in it early, scoring a converted try to make it 14-7 but the depth and talent of the 'Horns proved too much over 80 minutes.
UBC again equated themselves very well early against Alberta in their second game of the season but after the opening 20 minutes, the Panda wings took over en route to a 36-3 win. The 'Birds won their next contest with a strong defensive effort in an 18-0 shut out of the Calgary Dinos.
Their season finale against Victoria again began well, they led 18-5 at the half but injuries combined with a Victoria comeback in second half sent UBC to their third loss of the season.
