The UBC Thunderbirds continued their winning ways over the TRU Wolfpack during their pre-season tour of the Okanagan besting their northern provincial rivals 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 29-27, 26-24) for the second straight evening on Friday.
Newcomer
Demijan Savija paced the T-Birds with 15 kills while second-year
Nathan Schuck tallied nine kills off the bench over the final three sets. Middle
Cary Brett and libero
Blair Bann each had notable performances in Friday's win after sitting out Thursday's match. Brett had a team-high nine blocks and added six kills while Bann had a match-high 15 digs.
"It was much cleaner volleyball than last night but we still had too many unforced errors, especially from the service line," observed UBC head coach
Richard Schick. "Both setters,
Ryan Zwarich and
Rex Fenton, did a much better job putting our hitters in better situations and I think that was the biggest difference in our improved offence tonight."
The third and fourth sets were both see-saw affairs with the team's exchanging the lead multiple times before UBC closed both out for the victory.
"I was happy that we were able to get the set wins. It was not always pretty but to win the tight battles like that is a good step to take early on in the season," added Schick.
Gord Perrin led the hosts with a game-high 26 kills.
