SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies completed an upset sweep of the No. 10 ranked UBC Thunderbirds with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) win Saturday in the PAC in Saskatoon.
With the win the Huskies move to 4-2 on the season, while UBC falls to 1-5. A night earlier, the Huskies won 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-13).
In the win, Huskie outside hitters Alwyn Piche and Matt Busse had a match high 11 kills each, followed by Jarret Christenson and Geoffrey Zerr with seven each. T-Birds
Joe Cordonier and
Tanner Kozak led their team with six kills a piece. UBC libero
Blair Bann and Christenson each had six digs on the night.
The Huskies kept a consistent three point lead throughout the first set until they began to break away at the 14-10 when
Ryan Zwarich's serve went into the net. More UBC service errors and kills by Christenson and Piche led the Huskies to an 18-13 lead. The Huskies continued on a roll to sit up 24-18 but UBC was able to battle back and get three more points all on Huskie attacks that landed out of bounds. Busse ended the set at 25-21 when Bann couldn't dig up his attack.
UBC was able to keep the second set tighter matching point-for-point with the Huskies early on. However Saskatchewan was the first to both eight and 16 points. Down 18-12, UBC was able to pull within three when
Kyle Duperron's serves fooled Zerr and Busse. Piche and middle Ben Bourgeois answered back for the Huskies with four straight kills and the hosts took the set 25-18.
Saskatchewan jumped out to a large 9-2 lead to begin the final set. UBC could not hold serve long enough to put a string of points together and get back in the game. The Huskies won the set 25-16.
The Huskies take a week off before hosting the University of Alberta Golden Bears November 27-28. UBC returns home to host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack next weekend.
