T-Birds Earn Conference Bronze, Turn Sights Towards CIS Championship

Third-year centre Radha Jain, a Mississauga, Ont., native, scored three tries and Michelle Helmeczi kicked three converts as the UBC Thunderbirds defeated their provincial rivals the Victoria Vikes 46-0 in the third place game at the Canada West championship at the Strathcona Rugby Club outside of Edmonton.

With the win the T-Birds finish third at the conference championship tournament, but still advance to the national championship weekend, November 6-8, as tournament hosts.

Jain, who also plays for Canada's under-20 team, was a terror all weekend on opposing defences with her blazing speed and open-field elusiveness. The Human Kinetics student also had a try against Alberta in the semi-final, giving her four on the weekend.

"She's got the kind of speed and the kind of turnaround and change of pace that just terrifies other teams," said sophomore UBC head coach Lesley McKenzie. "I know that other coaches always have that in the back of their mind when they're preparing for us, so that's a huge asset for us."

UBC did all the damage they needed to do in the opening half, scoring 27 points on their beleaguered opponents, getting a pair of tries from Jain, two converts from senior fly-half Helmeczi and single tries from Caitlin Harris, Blaine Lyons, and Darcy Patterson.

The Vikes came close to cracking their weekend long goose-egg in the second half, getting strong runs from Andrina Nixon and Chelsey Minter, but were unable to break the Thunderbird defense.

After Jennifer Brule and Sidney Eaden added tries, and Helmeczi added a pair of converts, Jain added her third try of the game to close out the scoring at 46-0, and give UBC the win.

Jain was one of two T-Birds named to the Canada West all-star team as she was joined by lock Danielle Wilhoeft as those players recognized by the conference.

"We needed to get a few things under our belts before the national championship tournament begins, and although I didn't see 80 minutes of execution like I wanted to today, we played well enough to get the win," said McKenzie who was a five year T-Bird player before coming aboard as coach. "This tournament was about preparing us for the national championship weekend, we approached it with a training mentality, and the players all know the job isn't done."
