VANCOUVER – Coming off a 5-1 win on Saturday, the UBC Thunderbirds (8-2-0) put forth another solid effort on Sunday, shutting out the Alberta Pandas (2-6-2) 4-0 at Wright Field.
The T-Birds were in control from start to finish, getting two first half goals from
Samantha Smith and
Whitney Kroll and never giving the Pandas a chance to fight their way back into the game.
Kristyn Harrington and
Miranda Mann tallied for UBC in the second half to give them the 4-0 result.
"Coming back from a 5-1 win is hard," said UBC head coach Hash Kanjee. "These kids are young and trying to put together two good games back-to-back is not that easy. Alberta played a really structured game and made it really difficult for us but we persevered and did the things we needed to do."
The score might have been worse for Alberta if not for the efforts of goalie Tory Spencer, who made big saves on several good UBC scoring chances. Rookie goalie
Dina Bulfone got the win in goal for the 'Birds.
Smith got the scoring started in the 19th minute when she finished off a nice passing play off a short corner. Mann tallied five minutes later with a hard low drive from the top of the circle.
Robyn Pendleton then set up two quick goals for UBC in the second half that sealed the win for the 'Birds.
In the 54th minute, her shot produced a rebound that fell right to Harrington, who made no mistake in knocking the ball past Spencer before she could reposition herself.
Just one minute later, Pendleton was tied up by an Alberta defender while on a breakaway, winning a penalty stroke for her side. Mann stepped up and calmly slotted the ball just inside the left post to extend UBC's lead to four.
"What I like about us right now is we are getting some real team efforts," said Kanjee. "Everybody is starting to contribute their share and that is a good thing. We aren't relying on one or two people, but relying on everybody and that is a sign of a good team."
The T-Birds will be in Victoria next weekend to battle the Vikes for the Canada West title. A single point in the series will be enough to secure top spot for UBC.
Meanwhile, the Pandas will return home to battle the Calgary Dinos for the final CIS berth. The Pandas currently hold a one point advantage over the Dinos, so a single win or two ties next week will see them through to the national tournament.
