The UBC Thunderbirds evened their regular season record at 2-2 with a hard-fought 8-5 victory over the Victoria Vikes on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Field.
Despite controlling the play for long stretches, the T-Birds were unable to convert on their chances as bad weather and a high amount of penalties limited UBC offensive output.
UBC's
Christine Mehain was first to put her team on the scoreboard as she ran in for a try to make it 5-0 for the 'Birds in the first half.
Vikes scrum half, Kibby Evans answered for Victoria with a try in the corner to open the second half.
The game stayed in a deadlock as neither team was able to score points on converts and penalty goals until the 'Birds set up a penalty goal off a long rush late in the game.
UBC flyhalf
Michele Helmeczi was able to nail one through the uprights and put her team on top.
With the win, the T-Birds clinch third in the conference and will take on the host Alberta Pandas next weekend at the Canada West Championship in Edmonton. Lethbridge qualified in first with the Vikes earning the fourth seed.
