Dinos Upset T-Birds, Hand UBC Second Loss of Season

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos upset the UBC Thunderbirds 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Hawkings Field, handing the T-Birds just their second loss of the season. It was the first time the Dinos have beaten the T-Birds since 2000.

For the second day in a row, these teams faced off in winter temperatures and blowing snow. Saturday afternoon, the Dinos' lack of offence was their downfall as they dropped the first game of this series 4-1.

The Dinos opened the scoring at 25:05 after a sustained offensive effort resulted in a short corner. The initial shot on goal was taken by Courtney Campbell before Serena Lockhart tipped the ball upwards to avoid UBC's diving goaltender, Dina Bulfone.

The action continued back and forth with both Bulfone and Calgary 'keeper Stephaine Petrowitsch having to stop rushes and short corner shots throughout the match.

The Dinos went into halftime with the lead and came close to doubling it a few minutes into the second. That goal, a short corner snapshot from the top of the circle, was disallowed by the umpires.

With their confidence still intact, however, the Dinos adde their second tally in the 49th minute. This goal came from the stick of Carolina Romeo after she fired a shot off of a short corner. Bulfone caught a piece of it but couldn't deflect it far enough to prevent the second Calgary goal.

With a 2-0 score against them, the T-Birds offence woke up and began to pour the pressure on the Dinos resulting in a short corner and goal at 51:30. The T-Birds' leading scorer, Elise Milosevich, broke Petrowitsch's shutout after she put in a rebound from the short corner attempt.

Despite continued offensive pressure by the T-Birds in the final parts of the game, the Dinos would hang on to claim a 2-1 victory and their second win of the season, improving their record to 2-5-1. UBC falls to a 6-2.

The Dinos now move onto their next series against the second ranked University of Victoria Vikes in Calgary while UBC goes home to host the University of Alberta Pandas.
