T-Birds Heat Up Cold Day with 4-1 Win in Calgary

VANCOUVER – The University of British Columbia downed the Calgary Dinos 4-1 amid sub-zero temperatures and blowing snow in Calgary on Saturday afternoon.

The first place T-Birds set the tone early in the game, pushing the Dinos back into their end and keeping the pressure on throughout the game. The Dinos had just one shot on goal the entire match.

Despite the offensive discrepancy, Calgary 'keeper Stephanie Petrowitsch and her defensive cohorts held on valiantly and prevented a number of scoring chances in the opening of the game before UBC's Abigail Raye connected with the netting twenty minutes into the game. The goal came off a T-Bird short corner that saw four short passes inside the Dinos circle result in an out-of-position Dinos netminder and an easy finish.

"I thought considering the conditions we played pretty well. We should have scored a few more goals but considering the weather, our touch wasn't as good as it could have been," noted UBC head coach Hash Kanjee.

The Dinos responded immediately with a goal by Jessica Downie just four minutes later. Downie found herself open at the top of the T-Birds' circle and directed a shot off the left post and in.

UBC struck back less than 10 minutes later. A Robyn Pendleton shot was tipped above Petrowitsch's head by Elise Milosevich.

As the snow worsened in the second half so did the Dinos' deficit. UBC found the back of the net twice more before the time ran out on goals by Miranda Mann and Robyn Pendleton at 54:00 and 68:50.

Mann gained her opportunity when a desperate Dinos defence handed UBC a stroke, which was drained without issue by the UBC striker. Pendleton notched the extra insurance goal with a top corner shot from right in front of the Dinos net.

The Dinos (1-5-1) and T-Birds (6-1-0) face off once more before the weekend concludes, wrapping up their weekend series Sunday afternoon at Hawkings Field.
