UBC Sports Hall of Fame
Under Tom Johnson, UBC has become home to Canada’s most successful varsity swim program and a gateway for student-athletes to pursue their dreams on the international stage.
The native of Hudson, Que., swam for McGill University before embarking on a storied coaching career that included being on deck at nine Olympic Games. Since his arrival at UBC almost exactly 25 years ago, UBC’s swim program has won 18 women’s and 13 men’s CIS (now U SPORTS) championships. During that time, the 12-time CIS Coach of the Year successfully synchronized the resources and expertise of the Canadian Dolphins Swim Club, the UBC varsity swim program and Swimming Canada to create a national training centre that has produced 75 international competitors who have won 153 medals in international competition.
He has also mentored numerous assistant coaches who have gone on to prominent careers, including current Canadian national team head coach Randy Bennett, current UBC varsity head coach Steve Price and former varsity coach Derrick Schoof.
