UBC Thunderbirds runner Maria Bernard ?posted the best 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the NAIA so far this year en route to winning the event at the UBC Invitational on Good Friday in Vancouver.
The senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, completed the race in 10:15.6?0 to top the field. She also surpassed the NAIA 'A' standard as well as the Canadian standard for the Summer Universiade in South Korea, meaning she is eligible for selection to Team Canada for the event that Is also known as the World University Games.
?Bernard finished off the meet by placing second in the 10,000 metres, recording a time of ?35:13.16, which was just? behind teammate Amelie de Fenoyl. Bernard's time is the second best in the NAIA so far this year, and eclipsed the national 'A' standard.
To cap off her week, just this past Tuesday Bernard was named the Marilyn Pomfret Award Winner as UBC’s Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year at the annual UBC Big Block Awards Banquet.
This weekend the Thunderbirds will compete at the Simon Fraser University Emilie Mondor Invitational on Saturday, April 11th.
