A coach for 35 years, Bertrand brings a wealth of experience back to UBC as one of two assistants for the 2019-20 season.
He was part of a coaching staff that guided the Thunderbirds to two women’s and men’s U SPORTS championships before moving back to the province of Quebec in 2009 to work at the national swim centre in Montreal, and to take over as the head coach of the University of Montreal Carabins.
Between 2011 and 2013, Bertrand was the head coach at the University of Ottawa, the Greater Ottawa Kingfish swim club and the Ontario Regional Training Centre.
He joined Simon Fraser University varsity program in 2013 as an assistant coach and helped the Clan until 2018.
Since then, Bertrand has been building the sport locally at the club level, serving as the head coach with the Winskill Dolphins and the Kitimat Marlins (interim).
He won national Female Junior and Female Youth Coach of the Year Awards in 2008 as Savannah King, who later became a T-Bird, earned an Olympic spot on Team Canada.
Bertrand was on Canada’s coaching staff at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Spain.
He is an NCCP level 4 coach and earned a Bachelor of Exercise Science from Laval University.
