Overview - Men's Hockey

UBC players line up on the ice prior to puck drop

The UBC Thunderbirds Men’s Hockey team plays in Canada West, under the U SPORTS banner, the highest level of university hockey in Canada.

The goal is to graduate with a degree, continue to develop as players, compete for national championships, and allow our student-athletes to have a decision when they graduate: to pursue a professional hockey career, or enter the workforce with a degree from one of the most respected post-secondary institutions in the world.

The Thunderbirds have developed into a consistent contender in recent years, winning their first Canada West championship in over 50 years in the 2023-24 season and qualifying for the U SPORTS David Johnston University Cup national championship tournament in three of the last five years. Other successes for the UBC Men’s Hockey team include the following:
  • 56 Academic All-Canadian awards in the last 10 years
  • 10 U SPORTS All-Canadians, 3 U SPORTS All-Rookies, 1 U SPORTS Goaltender of the Year
  • 2 Canada West MVP awards, 1 Canada West Top Defenceman award, 1 Canada West Goaltender of the Year award
  • 4 Canada West first team All-Stars, 7 Canada West second team All-Stars, 5 Canada West All-Rookies in the last 10 years
  • 4 Canada West Coach of the Year awards
