UBC Debating Society

AMS Club & Varsity Athletics Club

The UBC Debating Society is a constituted student club of the Alma Mater Society of the University of British Columbia. The club is also a varsity athletics club with support from Athletics and Recreation. The club runs a competitive debate program, with regular training and in-house competition, and attends tournaments across the country and internationally.

Competitive Debate

The UBC Debate Society's goal is to be one of the best debating societies in the world.

Members meet twice a week during the academic year to learn and practice debate. For the first semester, members practice and compete in British Parliamentary (Worlds style) debate, and for the second semester the club practices in Canadian Parliamentary style. The UBC Debating Society competes at a number of in-house tournaments.

Programs

The Society also acts as a resource to promote debate across campus and in the larger community. To further this goal, it runs a workshop program that teaches the skills of debate directly in university classes, hosts a series of show debates on topics of public interest, and promotes debate at the high school level.

Membership

Any UBC student is eligible to become a member of the debating society; the membership fee is $10. Contact the UBC Debating Society at ubc.debate@gmail.com for more information on membership and meetings.
