VANCOUVER – After an offseason of training and preparations for the fall, the UBC Thunderbirds will be back on the pitch for their first match of the 2026-27 season when they face off against the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday, September 4.
This marks the third straight year that the T-Birds have faced the Spartans in their season opener, and the 10th meeting between the two Metro Vancouver sides since Trinity Western first played at UBC in 2021. The Spartans have yet to beat the 'Birds, but UBC head coach Didier Banse knows his team certainly can't afford to take the Langley side lightly.
"Trinity Western have brought in a large group of new recruits, and we expect those players to bring plenty of energy as they compete to establish themselves within the program," mused Banse. "We need to be ready to match that intensity and win our individual battles, which will provide the platform for us to play our game.
"Starting the season at home is exciting, and naturally, we want to begin with a win. However, our primary focus is on delivering a performance that reflects the work we have put in throughout training camp. If we are disciplined, connected and accurate in the key moments, the result should take care of itself."
The Thunderbirds will compete across many fronts, with their match against the Spartans serving as part of the Coastal Cup series between those two squads as well as the Victoria Vikes. UBC's two matches against UVic will also decide who takes home the Wightman Boot trophy, as well as being part of BC Rugby Premier League action.
The first semester will culminate in November's Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship. With the tournament hosted by Trinity Western this year, Friday's clash provides the added bonus of an early look against a potential opponent at nationals.
Following a 2025-26 season where the 'Birds once again claimed the Wightman Boot but fell in the semifinals of both the Canadian University Championship and the Premier League playoffs, the team is eager to try and take those next steps forward to lift more trophies.
"Last season left us hungry," remarked Banse. "We had some strong moments, but we also experienced difficult losses that showed us where we needed to improve. We have used the offseason to become clearer in how we want to play and more consistent in the standards we expect from one another.
"The mindset heading into this season is about taking ownership, staying connected and putting the team first. We know what we are capable of, but we also understand that it must be earned through our preparation and daily habits."
With a roster that boasts plenty of talented veterans, the Thunderbirds also have some exciting new recruits who will be hoping to make their mark early and often.
"We have an exciting group of newcomers who have brought energy and competition into the program," added Banse. "
Caden du Plessis is a highly-regarded prospect from Ontario who has progressed through the Ontario Blues age-grade pathway and has been identified within the Rugby Canada U-18 system. He has already made a strong impression with his physicality and willingness to learn.
Alex Muir brings valuable experience from the Canada U-20 environment and provides additional size and versatility in the forward pack.
"Several others are also pushing hard for opportunities. What has been most encouraging is not only their individual ability, but how quickly they have embraced the standards and expectations of our program."
