BELLINGHAM, WA – Following two weeks of training and preparation, the UBC Thunderbirds were back in action in Bellingham, Washington, to partake in the WWU Men's Invitational. After poor weather shortened the event to just two rounds, the T-Birds combined for five-over-par (581) to claim the sixth spot out of 15 teams.
Despite battling the drastic conditions on the course,
Aneesh Kaura led the offensive charge for the blue and gold. The fourth year got off to a blistering start, racking up five birdies without going over par through 18 holes before ending the tournament with a team-high 5-under par to tie for fifth in the individual rankings.
Manpreet Lalh and
Forrest Van Alstine were next up in the T-Bird team standings, closing out with an even score and a three-over-par, respectively.
Hosts, the Western Washington Vikings, finished atop the leaderboard with a combined 14-under par (562) after stellar play throughout both rounds. Highlighted by Daniel Blankenburg, the second year tallied eight birdies and only shot over par once throughout the two rounds to earn the third spot individually. While Denby Carswell was not far behind, after starting his second round with an eagle, the fourth year went on to tie for fifth, alongside fellow Vike Conrad Brown.
The UBCO Heat also had a strong showing in Washington. Led by Brayden Card's six-under par, the Heat secured the third-place podium finish with a combined stroke score of 573.
From here, the T-Birds will face a short turnaround as they gear up for the Canada West Championship next week. Both the men's and women's squads will head to Lethbridge, Alberta, for the highly anticipated two-day, three-round event, which opens on Monday, October 5, before concluding Tuesday, October 6.
